This walking around in a big city like Istanbul brought me to think about Francis Alÿs his work wich deals a lot with walking as a practice, wanderings, dislocation, interventions.
One work of him is walking with a painting the whole day, the painting hangs in a gallery and in the morning Alys takes it for a walk until the night when he returns it to the gallery. This action is repeated the next day.
When I saw the person on the photo I followed him (“Following Piece” by Vito Acconci where the artist defines his route by random tailing )
To think of the person transporting a painting as an re-enactment of a performance and me as another re-enactment made the walk feel like a parade and pursuit simultaneously. The person with the painting did walk very fast and knew his way quite well, after passing a 6 lane highway I lost him in the narrow streets of Istanbul. It was an adventures piece, the guy with the painting was a good sport and I was lost again.
Döppelganger - another art work of Alys is to mimic someone who looks like you. Alys: “I invent myself a role so as to slip into the newly found environment as another local character.”
