BORGEL-TRON

A generative music installation with 9 electronic organs and a ball.
Organs are able to sense and kick a ball; after they kicked the ball to another organ they play a predefined chord for some seconds. Because the ball follows an undefined path it is a random composition.

An influence on the choice of chords is the piece “Volumnia” from Hungarian composer Ligeti. The piece is played with 3 musicians on one church organ. It’s a contemporary piece with a lot of cluster chords with big volume changes, using the organ as a “mechanical extension” how Ligeti called it. When the piece was performed for the first time, A German church organ was destroyed by catching fire in the air supply motor that got overheated by all the cluster chords.

The organs of Borgel-Tron where offered for free on eBay, they still worked perfectly when picked up from people in the neighborhood of Groningen. A documentary about the people who gave away their organs is part of the installation.
